Newcastle reportedly desperate to sign Charlie Austin; Steve McClaren doing all he can to seal deal

Newcastle United are allegedly still working hard to seal a deal for the Queens Park Rangers striker despite recent reports to the contrary.

According to a report from London 24, Newcastle United remain desperate to sign Charlie Austin this summer.

This follows a report from the Mirror earlier this weekend that claimed the Magpies had in fact turned their attention away from Austin in an attempt to sign Aleksandar Mitrovic, with the former allegedly holding out to see if Chelsea made a move for him.

Well, as with any transfer window there are conflicting reports and London 24 claims that Newcastle remain as focused as ever in signing the Queens Park Rangers front-man this summer, with the Magpies hierarchy potentially ready to pay £15million for the marksman.

Austin scored 18 goals in 35 Premier League matches last season and with QPR relegated it is no surprise to see so many top-flight clubs linked with the 26-year-old, especially as he only has one year left on his current contract.

That has seemingly not stopped QPR from putting a hefty price-tag on his head but the latest report claims Newcastle are desperate to get their man despite six clubs allegedly keeping tabs on him.

Along with Newcastle, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Bournemouth, Leicester City and Chelsea are all said to be interested in the player with varying degrees of seriousness.

But with Newcastle manager Steve McClaren reportedly doing all he can to bring Austin to St James’ Park, if they do miss out on him it seems it will not be through lack of trying.
