Linked with a Spurs summer exit - but could Lamela have been Argentina's Copa America saviour?

Tata Martino was criticised in the wake of another final loss for Argentina.

Erik Lamela may have been linked with a Tottenham Hotspur exit this summer but there are plenty who can still see the Argentine playing a big role in north London.

And it's a shame Tata Martino couldn't foresee Lamela playing a role for him at the Copa America - because the 23-year-old could well have been Argentina's saviour in the final against Chile.

Indeed, it might not seem like the Tottenham winger could make a difference in a side containing Lionel Messi at first but scroll through the opinions of Argentina fans online and you soon realise it isn't that simple.

Boss Martino has been criticised for his team selection against Chile, notably bringing on Gonzalo Higuain - who seems to have become a perennial disappointment - and not Carlos Tevez.

But the decision to bring Ever Banega on late in the game was, too, criticised.

If there's one thing Lamela can do, it's bring energy and create in the final third. The Spurs man's final product might be missing but that is exactly what Messi and co are there for.

The 23-year-old winger was barely used all tournament - so why did Martino take him in the first place?

With the final deadlocked in the second half, one moment could have decided it all - and the Tottenham man's career might have been reborn with it. He could have been Argentina's saviour. But now we'll never know.
