Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with an interesting swap deal but they would be wise to avoid it.
The report suggests that Swiss international Xherdan Shaqiri could be the player to head in the opposite direction, but the simple fact is Tottenham would be wise to avoid such a move at all costs.
Shaqiri is a famous name in England but he is a player whose reputation is considerably bigger than his recent achievements in the game.
The 23-year-old signed for Inter Milan back in January but did not exactly set the San Siro on fire upon arriving, scoring two goals and providing three assists in 20 appearances.
Prior to that, 15 appearances for Bayern saw a return of three goals, one assist and a considerable amount of time spent on the bench.
Shaqiri is a talented player, of that there is no doubt, but fans should not get too caught up by his World Cup hat-trick last summer or his famous name, and Tottenham supporters certainly should not think they would be getting a great deal parting with one young winger and replacing him with another.
Lamela’s first season at Tottenham can be written-off following serious injury, meaning that in many ways the most recent campaign was the one where he began to find his feet.
At just 23 (the same age as Shaqiri) Lamela is getting used to the Premier League and showed last season that he is growing into a fine player.
He is going to be a star in time, so why replace him with another enigma who could set Tottenham back in terms of needing plenty of time to settle himself?
Shaqiri is good and in time he could be great, but he is not the superstar some fans suggest and Tottenham would be wise to focus on getting the best out of the Argentine international, rather than sign a player who – if the reports are true – has been deemed surplus to requirements at Inter after just six months.
