The Spurs right-back helped Jurgen Klinsmann's men secure a 4-0 win in their final warm-up game before the Gold Cup.
Tottenham Hotspur’s DeAndre Yedlin put in another impressive performance for the US national team on Friday night as his side secured a comfortable 4-0 friendly win over Guatemala in Nashville, Tennessee.
Head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has used the versatile speedster as a late-game weapon off the bench in recent matches but gave him the start in midfield in their final Gold Cup tune-up and he did not disappoint, proving one of the team’s most dangerous attacking outlets.
After Jozy Altidore missed the chance to open the scoring from the penalty spot in the 17th-minute, it was Yedlin who helped create the first three minutes later, burning past Guatemala defender Wilson Lalin before sending a quick cross into the box that Carlos Castrillo headed past his own goalkeeper in comical fashion.
The right winger also assisted the USA’s second just before the hour, finding full-back Timothy Chandler with a cutback pass for his teammate to launch a 30-yard rocket past opposition goalkeeper Paulo Motta.
Clint Dempsey then added a third with a sublime panenka spot-kick after newly-appointed captain Michael Bradley was brought down in the box in the 71st-minute, before Gyasi Zardes set up fellow substitute Chris Wondolowski to complete the scoring four minutes from the end.
While Zardes’ 45-minute outing was perhaps the highlight of the game, Yedlin’s midfield showing was also more than encouraging and could well have sealed him a place in Klinsmann’s first-choice XI for the upcoming Gold Cup.
USA fans certainly seem to think he deserves a place in the starting line-up for Tuesday’s tournament opener against Honduras, with the following being a selection of the Twitter-based reactions to his latest run-out.
