According to a report in The Telegraph, Liverpool are planning on cutting Javier Manquillo’s loan spell short due to the arrival of Nathaniel Clyne from Southampton.
The Spanish U21 international arrived on Merseyside last summer, the Reds securing a two-year loan deal with Atletico Madrid with the option to buy him after the first 12 months.
Manquillo started his Anfield career brightly, playing the 90 minutes ahead of regular right-back Glen Johnson during the club’s opening day 2-1 victory over Southampton.
He went on to play a number of games at the beginning of the campaign, averaging an impressive 3.2 tackles, 2.2 interceptions and 2.4 effective clearances per Premier League encounter.
However, the 21-year-old suffered as a result of the club’s poor form and was the biggest loser in the club’s formation change from a flat back-four to a new three-man defence.
Manquillo’s place in the side was ultimately made redundant, with his last Premier League appearance coming during a 4-1 win over Swansea City in late December.
As a result, speculation has been rife over his future with the club and the acquisition of Clyne, plus the return of the loaned out Andre Wisdom, has seen the need of Manquillo’s services fade away.
But are the Reds potentially making a mistake in deciding against making his stay permanent? Here’s a selection of Tweets from the Liverpool supporters concerning the latest developments.
Javier Manquillo contract being cancelled, Surely we need to be looking at who scouted him in first place #LFC— Ryan Deery (@RD8LFC) July 3, 2015
Am I the only one that thinks that Manquillo isn't good enough? #lfc— BIG*Fella*LFC (@gavinjoneslive) July 3, 2015
Manquillo was never good enough, no need to have him for another season. #LFC— Jay Smith ✌ (@jaysmith93) July 3, 2015
I remember saying Manquillo was just a average prospect start of last season, received lot of flak..wonder where they are now #LFC— Man of Justice (@SuperGops) July 3, 2015
Considering age & upheaval from his own country I thought Manquillo showed a lot of promise. Shame if #LFC got rid - give him 1 more season.— Liverpool_T (@Liverpool_T_) July 3, 2015
Feel sorry for Manquillo. Still think he has a lot to offer #lfc— Tony Mc (@tonymc589) July 3, 2015
It's probably best to let Manquillo leave, would of taken him more time to adapt to the PL and he wasn't good enough, for now anyway. #LFC— LFC Live News (@LFC_NEW5) July 3, 2015
If we cancel the Manquillo loan then where is our RB cover? #LFC— Rahul Puri (@rahulpuri) July 3, 2015
