Former Wigan Athletic striker Franco di Santo got his pre-season off to a flier by bagging a hat-trick in an 11-0 victory.
Di Santo led the line for German Bundesliga side Werder Bremen against fourth tier side MSV Neuruppin.
The Argentine scored his three goals within the first 26 minutes of the game, and while he then eased off, his teammates did not as they recorded a comprehensive victory.
The striker has only one year remaining on his contract at Bremen, leading to speculation over his future at the club.
Sunderland's sporting director Lee Congleton worked with Di Santo at Chelsea, where Di Santo spent a season in 2009/10.
Di Santo however is keen to negotiate a contract extension, enjoying his time at the German club where has scored 18 goals in 51 games.
He told newspaper BILD this week: "Many wanted me, but I have already said, I will prefer to stay at Werder. We are in talks together. I would like to extend, and I hope Werder sees it that way."
His quick fire hat-trick will have done his chances no harm, and demonstrated that he is determined to kick on heading into next season.
