Report: Fulham keen on signing Aston Villa defensive outcast Joe Bennett

Fulham Craven Cottage

The defender spent last season on loan at Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Mirror are reporting that Fulham are keen on Aston Villa defender Joe Bennett, who is set to return to first-team training with the club on Monday.

Bennett was snapped up from Middlesbrough in 2012 as part of Paul Lambert’s youth recruitment drive. However he never quite made the grade at Villa and after one season was loaned out to Brighton and Hove Albion last season.

Now it is believed he is keen on a move to London and Fulham boss Kit Symons is said to be in touch with Villa for the former England under-21 international.

Tim Sherwood has previously stated that all previously loaned out players will get a chance at Villa, but a good offer for Bennett may make him change his mind.

Should Villa sell?

Bennett is a good, solid player but in all honesty not good enough for the Premier League. That being said, left-back is a problem position for Villa. They have been linked with Luke Garbutt and Jordon Amavi this week, so moving Bennett on might help them bring in the funds and clear the wage-bill for a new left-back option.

If Fulham are serious with their interest, Villa would be wise to come to an agreement.
