Report: Atletico Madrid eye Xherdan Shaqiri as Arda Turan replacement

The Inter Milan man has also been linked with a move to the Premier League.

Atletico Madrid may eye Xherdan Shaqiri as a potential replacement for Arda Turan, reports MundoDeportivo.

Turan looks set to leave Vincente Calderon this summer in a big-money move, with a number of Europe’s top sides rumoured to be looking at acquiring him.

Diego Simeone’s side would naturally need a replacement then, and had looked to sign Yevhen Konoplyanka until he joined La Liga rivals Sevilla instead. That has turned their attention to Shaqiri, who is a player they have tracked for several years according to MundoDeportivo, and is seemingly available at Inter Milan.

Indeed, Atletico’s reported interest will come as a big blow to several Premier League teams, with both Stoke City and Everton having been credited with holding an interest in the Switzerland international, and the Potters even agreeing a £12million fee according to BBC Sport.

Spain a more attractive option than England

A move to Spain would likely be preferable for the former Bayern Munich man, with Simeone’s side able to offer Champions League football.

That is something neither Everton nor Stoke would be able to offer, while current club Inter Milan also failed to qualify for that competition, or even the Europa League last season.

From a purely financial standpoint as well, Atletico could likely offer more money, meaning a move to Spain would look increasingly likely should they decide to make a move.
