Are Spurs paving the way for a marquee signing with duo's exit?

Spurs are reportedly close to two sales in a key position. Two out must surely mean at least one in? Everton, Southampton & Aston Villa men are candidates.

According to London24 (among others), Benjamin Stambouli and Etienne Capoue are set to leave Tottenham Hotspur and join Premier League rivals Watford.

Opinions on the double-sale may be mixed - some will no doubt want the pair to be given more of a chance, others will be delighted.

And, with Paulinho already having left north London this summer, are Spurs perhaps paving the way for a marquee signing?

Indeed, from a team who had five realistic options in central midfield (not including Paulinho), Tottenham are now down to three - with Mousa Dembele hardly in-favour last season, either.

That isn't a central midfield with enough cover for a top-four chase. Daniel Levy and Mauricio Pochettino will know that - so is someone on their way in?

Despite a move to Manchester United being described as a done deal recently, the Morgan Schneiderlin links with Spurs have continued since, as per the Daily Mail among others..

Meanwhile, Aston Villa's Fabian Delph (the Sun) and Everton's James McCarthy (also the Mail) have also been linked.

The loss of Stambouli and Capoue certainly might not be a great one for Pochettino - who didn't play the duo all that much anyway. But it still reduces Tottenham's options through the middle significantly. The logical approach of two going out would surely be at least one being brought in...
