Aston Villa and Leeds United have been linked with signing Avenatti.
A deal is to be confirmed by the start of next week for the Uruguayan forward, who netted 13 goals and registered five assists in 39 games last term.
This deals a blow to two English clubs, with Leeds United and Aston Villa said to have been showing an interest in the 22-year-old during this summer transfer window.
TMW claimed that Villa and Leeds had been impressed by Avenatti’s attacking play during the 2014/15 campaign, and were keen on signing the youngster this summer.
A 6ft 5in target man, Avenatti would certainly have provided something different to both clubs, being a classically training target man, but there would always be doubts about his ability to adapt to English football.
Having not followed up their interest in the striker, Avenatti will join Cagliari instead of Villa or Leeds, where he will also be playing in Serie B, looking to help the troubled club secure promotion to back to the the top flight following their relegation at the end of last season.
