Report: Sheffield Wednesday forward Chris Maguire leaving on a free, Bolton and Leeds keen

Sheffield Wednesday 2

The Scottish international is all set for an exit from Hillsborough this month.

Sheffield Wednesday winger Chris Maguire is set to leave the club for free after failing to agree a new deal with the club, reports The Sheffield Star.

The Scottish international, who is also capable of playing up top, had been in negotiations to extend his deal but it seems that he could not come to an agreement with the new management at the club over a future at Hillsborough. Wednesday recently replaced manager Stuart Gray with Carlos Carvalhal – which is almost certain to have played some part in the departure.

The report claims however that the reason behind his departure was the reduced terms of an agreement and the fact he was only offered a one-year extension.

Where will he go?

The same report links two clubs to the player, both Championship rivals.

Bolton Wanderers are first out the blocks it would appear. It is reported that The Trotters held talks with the Scotland international, who played 46 times last season and scored eight goals, last month and they are hopeful of a deal.

Leeds United are also being linked. The Yorkshire rivals have done well with their summer recruitment so far and Maguire would be welcome at Leeds considering their lack of wide options. Interestingly, he scored what now looks like being his last ever goal for The Owls against Leeds in April.

Either side would be lucky to have this experienced Championship operator in their ranks and time will tell where he ends up.
