Why West Ham should be looking to sign Dries Mertens this summer

West Ham should try to sign Dries Mertens this summer, who has been linked with Everton.

Mertens is available for transfer this summer, with Everton planning a move for the Belgian winger, according to HLN.

The 28-year-old looks set to leave the club, and whilst Everton have submitted an offer for him, it should be West Ham that are going all out to sign the winger.

Mertens would be a perfect player for the Hammers, and another step in the right direction for the club who have already completed some fantastic transfer business.

Dimitri Payet and Pedro Obiang have arrived at the Boleyn Ground, and Mertens would be a another player with European and international experience to be signed, as the club prepare for a campaign with Europa League football.

Not only is he a player with the kind of reputation who the Hammers should be targeting, but he also fills a positional void in the first-team squad.

Although able to play on the wing, the likes of Payet, Stewart Downing and Enner Valencia all excel in the centre of the pitch, leaving Matt Jarvis as the only natural wide-man.

However, he is not good enough to play at the top level, and Mertens would be a player to incredibly improve the first-team. He would allow Slaven Bilic to alter systems if needed, and as the Croatian boss favours a team with wingers naturally, he needs to bring in more natural wide players this summer.

Mertens is available this summer, and currently playing at the peak of his abilities, he would be a fantastic signing for the Hammers.
