Why Sergio Ramos to Manchester United would overtake Petr Cech to Arsenal as the signing of the summer

If Manchester United can sign Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos, it will surpass Arsenal’s coup of Chelsea’s Petr Cech.

According to Sky Sports, Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos wants to leave Spain in order to join Mancester United, with the Premier League giants bidding close to £30 million for his signature.

The report states that the Spanish international is unhappy in Madrid and wants to leave the club despite having two years remaining on his current deal.

And, if Manchester United can pull off a deal that sees the 29-year-old join the club this summer, it will be hard to look past the Seville-born defender as the best signing of the transfer window - not only in England but across Europe.

Arsenal’s incredible signing of Chelsea’s Petr Cech, who, as the Mirror reported, signed for the Gunners for less than £11m, can be considered as the holder of said accolade as things stand.

Why would Ramos’s signing be important to United?

Although Chelsea are likely to go into the season as favourites whether the Spaniard signs or not, Louis van Gaal will have considerably strengthend his defence in one fell swoop.

Last season, the Red Devils were often lamented for their lack of quality at the back and the former Dutch national coach chopped and changed without really landing on a settled partnership.

The likes of Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett added a youthful energy to United’s play but their lack of experience dearly cost the club on more than one occasion.

Ramos, as well as being one of the best defenders in the world, will come in and add a wealth of much-needed experience. He could act as a leader from the back, replacing something the club have lacked since the decisions to allow Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand leave Old Trafford.

The only problem, of course, is if Ramos is merely using Manchester United as bait to earn himself a new Madrid deal. Van Gaal will hope that isn't the case...
