Celtic boss Ronny Deila was suitably impressed with debutant Dedryck Boyata.

Celtic manager Ronny Deila has told the club's official Twitter account that he was impressed with Dedryck Boyata's pre-season debut on Wednesday.

The Bhoys kicked off their pre-season preparations with a 2-0 win over Den Bosch in Paisley, as goals from Gary Mackay-Steven and a Kadeem Pantophlet own goal handed Deila a victory.

With the Champions League qualifiers against Stjarnan closing in, Celtic have started their preparations early, and the game against Den Bosch gave Deila a chance to give some playing time to some fringe players - as well as new signing Boyata.

The 24-year-old defender became Celtic's first summer signing last month, arriving on a permanent deal from Manchester City having barely played for the Premier League giants.

The Belgian started against Den Bosch alongside Virgil van Dijk in the heart of the Celtic defence, and speaking to the club's official Twitter account after the game, Deila praised his new signing.

Ideal Denayer replacement?

Last season, Celtic signed a Belgian defender from Manchester City who instantly became a fan favourite thanks to his superb displays.

That was Jason Denayer, and now the youngster has returned to City, he has now been replaced by another Belgian in Boyata.

With similar athletic qualities to his former City team-mate Denayer, Boyata could well be the ideal replacement - and the good thing for Celtic is that they have him permanently rather than when Denayer was on loan.

Boyata has untapped potential from his time at City, and Deila may just be the man to help him get his career back on track in Glasgow, given that he is expected to play first-team football on a regular basis.
