Reports are circling that Southampton remain very much in the running for Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld, according to the likes of the Guardian, with Sky Sports also suggesting that Tottenham are in discussions regarding a deal for the Belgium international.
Alderweireld made 28 appearances for the Saints last season while on loan from La Liga, becoming a key man in both defence and midfield as the South Coast club achieved their best Premier League finish since 1990.
Southampton believe their previous contact with Atletico, as well as the player's good experiences at St Mary's will work in their favour, and have opened talks with the club regarding a move according to the Guardian, though the Spanish club are reportedly open to selling to the highest bidder.
Alderweireld would be a key signing for both teams
The Belgian was a vital ingredient in Southampton's superb defensive performances last season, with Ronald Koeman encouraging the Saints to the second best defensive record of all Premier League sides.
With Koeman having lost Nathaniel Clyne, and possibly losing Morgan Schneiderlin too, an inability to keep the 26-year-old at St Mary's would see the club deprived of three of their star performers from the last campaign, something that may be a stretch too far even for the Dutchman.
Tottenham need Alderweireld for different reasons, with Spurs having one of the poorest defences in the division. Mauricio Pochettino would likely feel that the former Ajax man would be a superb partner for Belgian teammate Jan Vertonghen.
