Report: Newcastle dealt blow in Aleksandar Mitrovic pursuit as Roma launch bid

St James Park Newcastle

The Italians have reportedly turned their attention to the Anderlecht striker after struggling to make progress in a proposed move for Edin Dzeko.

Newcastle’s ongoing pursuit of attacking reinforcements looks to have been hampered by claims that Roma have tabled an £8.5 million bid for Aleksandar Mitrovic, as per Calcio Mercato.

The Serbian forward has been long linked to the Magpies, with a report in the Daily Mail back in May claiming a £15 million deal had been agreed.

Anderlecht are believed to want somewhere around that figure for his signature, so the Italian club’s offer remains some way off, but their interest is sure to throw a spanner in the works.

The 20-year old is one of Europe’s hottest striking properties after his fantastic showing last season which saw him bag 20 goals, including one against Arsenal in the Champions League.

Roma have been strongly linked with Manchester City forward Dzeko by the likes of The Mirror, but the Bosnian’s valuation is proving something of a stumbling block for the Serie A club.

Newcastle now face a greater struggle to secure Mitrovic’s signature in what has been a quiet summer on the transfer front so far.

Same old story?

No new faces have yet to arrive and speculation is beginning to mount among fans that Mike Ashley's promises of investment at the end of last season may fail to materialise.

The Magpies have been linked with several players and numerous bids have supposedly been launched this summer, but their failure to get anything over the line is leading to worries over the mentality at the top of the club.

Investment is a must if Newcastle are to remain in the Premier League next season and the lack of action in the first part of the summer doesn't bode particularly well for those aspirations.
