Aston Villa look to have beaten off interest from West Ham, Crystal Palace, Newcastle and Southampton for Gueye.
The Daily Mail reported yesterday that Villa were set to submit a bid for Lille midfielder Idrissa Gueye, and it has been claimed by RMC Sport today that he is set to travel to Birmingham to hold contract talks with the club.
The 25-year-old has been the centre of much transfer speculation over the last few weeks, with TMW claiming that Newcastle wanted to sign him, the Mail reporting on interest from West Ham and Crystal Palace, and Southampton keen on him, as per France Football.
Villa were behind the pack in showing their interest, but having submitted their offer yesterday, they are now in pole position to land the talented box-to-box midfielder.
The RMC report claims that, although many other clubs had submitted offers for Gueye, only Villa reached the asking price that Lille requested. They submitted an offer of roughly £9 million with add-ons, and the deal to bring Gueye to Villa is in full swing.
A Senegalese international, Gueye will add a strong physical presence to a midfield currently lacking in energy and forward vision. He netted four goals in 44 games last term, and if Villa do manage to secure a deal with him, they will be making a real statement of intent by signing a player who has been targeted by clubs with European football to their name.
