Tottenham Hotspur fans react on Twitter to Lewis Holtby sale

Lewis Holtby has clinched a permanent move away from Tottenham, and fans have been having their say.

Tottenham Hotspur announced on their official website that Lewis Holtby has completed his permanent move to Hamburg.

Holtby spent last season on loan with the Bundesliga side, helping them avoid relegation in a nail biting play-off, which led to wild celebrations despite a disappointing season.

He even took part in the club's first pre-season training session yesterday, with his move coming as little surprise, ending any slim hope of another chance at Spurs.

Signed in January 2013 from Schalke, Holtby's main misfortune was his timing. He was signed by Andre Villas-Boas, but got lost in the shuffle amid a splurge of new players after Gareth Bale's sale months later, and ended up being loaned out to Fulham after Tim Sherwood was appointed as head coach.

Mauricio Pochettino had other plans too, sanctioning his departure last summer, despite his work ethic potentially being an excellent fit for his side.

Holtby played only 25 Premier League games for Spurs, scoring once and providing two assists.

Last season at Hamburg he missed a key period in the new year due to an injury sustained in a friendly match during the winter break, but featured in 25 games in total, including the key end of season matches.

With Rafael van der Vaart leaving the club on a free transfer for Real Betis, there is a greater chance of Holtby getting a chance to shine offensively next season, failing to find the net in 2014/15.

There remains a feeling Tottenham never really saw the best of him, and Premier League clubs may well have missed a trick by not attempting to beat Hamburg to his signature.

Here is a look at how Spurs fans reacted on Twitter to his sale.
