The Argentine-born Italian forward's time with the Saints truly came to an end a while ago, as he failed to settle into the first team at St Mary's at the first time of asking.
It has taken this long for Southampton to let go of the striker, however, and it was a signal of intent that they had lost patience to the extent they were prepared to force a cancellation.
Fans have been left delighted, especially after the blow of seeing right-back Nathaniel Clyne join Liverpool.
Indeed, the 24-year-old was confirmed as a Reds player on Wednesday afternoon and Southampton supporters were understandably disappointed. That feeling was softened, though, as news filtered through of Osvaldo's release.
Some optimistic Saints fans are also hoping the wages and shirt number freed up by the forward leaves room for Toby Alderweireld to join Southampton on a permanent deal next season...
Here's how fans reacted on Twitter to the move, recovering from the disappointment of losing another of their star players to Liverpool:
With osvaldo off the wage books now does that free up big wages to go onto the deal for alderweireld? I hope so!! #saintsfc— Glen Kinchington (@glen5851) July 1, 2015
#saintsfc terminate Osvaldo's contract, freeing up wages whilst also freeing up no.17 shirt, Toby's number last season. Coincidence? Yes.— Bob (@YeOldeSaint) July 1, 2015
Reckon Pochettino should take another gamble on Osvaldo #saintsfc— Kingsland Corner (@KingslandCorner) July 1, 2015
