Report: Manchester United enter race for Dutch midfielder Jordy Clasie

Jordy Clasie

Manchester United want the midfielder, also linked to Aston Villa, Newcastle, Southampton and Sunderland.

Clasie has become one of the most in-demand transfer targets in European football this summer, and a report in Voetbal International has claimed that Manchester United are the latest team to show an interest in signing him.

A deep-lying midfielder, Clasie captains the Feyenoord first-team, but it is believed that he will leave this summer after outgrowing the team. He is a fully-capped Dutch international, and United head coach Louis van Gaal is known to be fond of him, having selected the young midfielder as part of his 2014 World Cup squad.

However, United face interest in the race to sign Clasie, with a host of other Premier League teams all wanting to bring him to England.

The Telegraph have claimed that Aston Villa will submit an offer for Clasie, whilst the Mirror has reported on interest in him from both Southampton and Newcastle. Sunderland have also been listed as a potential destination for the talented midfielder, according to SoccerNews.

The Red Devils are undoubtedly the biggest club of all of those interested parties, and Clasie’s relationship with van Gaal could prove decisive if they truly intend to sign him this summer.

Would Clasie be a good signing for United?

The Dutchman is very similar in play to Michael Carrick, and being 10 years younger, can become a long-term replacement for the midfielder. Carrick’s influence was felt last term, with his calming presence in front of the defence a vital component of United’s rise to the top four.

Without him playing, van Gaal’s men always struggled, but with injuries and age catching up with him, Carrick cannot be relied upon for much longer.

Clasie would be a perfect replacement, with both his ball-winning and ball-recycling skills excellent. Last term, he averaged 67 passes per game for Feyenoord with a completion ratio of 83.5%.

He also completed a high number of defensive actions every time he took to the field, with 2.7 tackles, 2.2 interceptions, and 1.3 clearances per game.

Clasie is one of the best prospective midfielders in the game, and United should be going all out to sign the perfect replacement for the valuable Michael Carrick.
