Report: Manchester United set to miss out on Nicolas Gaitan following Atletico Madrid agreement

Atletico Madrid have reportedly agreed to sign long-term Manchester United target Nicolas Gaitan from Benfica.

According to Spanish news-outlet Marca, Atletico Madrid have reached an agreement for Benfica winger and Manchester United target Nicolas Gaitan as a replacement for Arda Turan, in case the Turk leaves.

Gaitan renewed his contract last November, extending his stay with Benfica until 2018, but this new deal included a reduction in his release clause - to €35 million. Marca's report suggests that a deal has been made between Atletico president Miguel Angel Gil and his Benfica counterpart Luis Filipe Vieira to further reduce the price.

This is a clear indication of the Spanish outfit's plan to replace the departing Arda Turn, who has expressed uncertainty – as reported in the Guardian - over his future at the Vicente Calderon. The Turkish international is understood to be attracting the attention of Barcelona as well as Premier League rivals Manchester United and Chelsea.

For Gaitan, a move to Atletico Madrid would see the Red Devils miss out on a player who notched four goals - while providing an incredible 15 assists - in the Portuguese top-flight last season. In what is likely to be his final season at the club, he played a major role in Benfica's domestic success.

The Argentine midfielder has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford over the last couple of transfer windows (as per the Daily Star) - with this summer proving little different - but thus far, it is unclear whether there has ever been an official offer from the Old Trafford outfit. A move to La Liga would, of course, end any ongoing speculation between the two parties.
