Mirallas looks to be on his way out of Goodison Park this summer, and a report in HLN has claimed that Everton are targeting fellow Belgian winger Mertens as his replacement.
The Mirror has reported that Spurs want to sign Mirallas, opening the door to Mertens arriving on Merseyside. Able to play on either wing, the 28-year-old is a direct replacement for his international compatriot, and Napoli are open to selling him.
The Italian outfit want to receive at least £10 million before letting Mertens leave, and Everton will be looking to make roughly the same amount from any sale of Mirallas.
The Toffees are stated as having the most concrete interest in the winger, although Napoli’s Serie A rivals Internazionale are also taking him. It is not expected that an approach will be made this week, with Mertens on his honeymoon, but Everton will formalise their interest in him when back in Italy.
Mertens has played for Napoli since the summer of 2013, when he moved from PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands. The 44-capped international star has made 98 appearances for the Serie A side his signing, scoring 23 goals and registering the same number of assists.
He has built a reputation as a dependable, if not outstanding, winger, and would be a good replacement for Mirallas at Goodison Park. He still has his peak years ahead of him, and is far more of a team player than Mirallas has shown himself to be.
With Mertens on the market, Everton have been wise to show an interest in moving for him, and they would be making a strong move if they manage to complete a deal with the talented winger this summer.
