Director finally announces the title of the third Star Trek movie.
The past few weeks have seen many rumours surrounding the next installment in the Star Trek movie franchise and director Justin Lin (Fast 5, Fast & Furious, Tokyo Drift) has finally put the rumours to bed.
The next movie will be called Star Trek Beyond and Lin chose Twitter to make his announcement.
The latest movie, which will be co-written with Simon Pegg (Hot Fuzz, Spaced, Shaun of the Dead) who also stars as Scotty, is set to be a little different from the previous movies with many believing Pegg's writing involvement will lead to a lighter and more comic affair.
Little else has been revealed regarding Star Trek Beyond but we do know that Chris Pine (Star Trek, Into Darkness, Unstoppable) will return as Captain James T Kirk whilst Zachary Quinto (Star Trek, Into Darkness, Heroes) will return as Spock.
Some rumours have surfaced regarding other cast members, most notably that Idris Elba (Luther, Thor, Prometheus) is set to be the movie's Villain whilst the original Captain Kirk, William Shatner (Star Trek, S**t My Dad Says, Boston Legal), may well make an appearance.
This will, of course, be the first Star Trek release since the passing of Leonard Nimoy so it seems unlikely we'll see a return of "other timeline" Spock unless there's some serious CGI involved. You can almost certainly expect a tribute to the great man in the movie at some point however.
Star Trek Beyond will be released in July 2016.
