Report: Inter Milan interested in Chelsea’s John Obi Mikel

Jose Mourinho is not keen to sell but he may face difficulties in convincing the player to stay at Stamford Bridge.

Inter Milan are interested in a move for Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel, according to the Daily Mail.

The Italians are currently chasing a deal for Felipe Melo from Galatasaray but if they fail to sign the Brazilian, they have reportedly identified Mikel as the perfect alternative.

The midfielder struggled to break into the Chelsea first team last season making most of his appearances late in games, with fellow defensive midfield man Nemanja Matic continuing to impress.

According to the report from the Daily Mail though, Jose Mourinho would not want to lose the Nigerian, though he accepts it may be hard to persuade him to stay at Stamford Bridge given he will likely spend most of the season on the bench.

Stiff competition

Indeed, while Mikel remains a firm favourite of Mourinho, it is unlikely he will be a regular starter now or in the future given the players Mourinho has at his disposal.

Aside from Matic, there is also Brazilian Ramires to consider, as he has impressed since Mourinho’s return in 2013. There is also youngster Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who is likely to see more game time having impressed at the end of last season.

A move away may be the only option for Mikel then, who at 28-years-old still has a lot to offer a number of clubs.
