Manchester United would be signing a top defender in Sergio Ramos, says Jamie Carragher

Pepe And Ramos

The Reds have been linked with a big money move for the Spaniard and Carragher says he is one of the top defenders in Europe.

Manchester United would be signing one of the top defenders in Europe if they secure a deal for Sergio Ramos, says Jamie Carragher on Kicca.

The Real Madrid defender’s contract talks at the La Liga side have reached an impasse, with the big stalling point thought to be how much money he wants.

That has led to links with a move to Manchester United, who are looking likely to be busy this summer as manager Louis van Gaal aims to add quality to his squad ahead of their return to the Champions League next season.

And Carragher says a deal for Ramos would see them signing a top defender and more importantly a leader.

“In Ramos Man United will be signing one of the top defenders in Europe & a leader if they can pull the deal off,” he wrote on Kicca.

“There is still a feeling that he's overrated in England which I disagree with his trophy haul & playing for Real Madrid for so long shows his quality as the pressure to perform for club & country for so long is huge.”

United are lacking both experience and quality in defence

At this moment in time the United squad is seriously lacking in the defensive areas, with current central defensive duo Chris Smalling and Phil Jones not looking like safe options at the level the club wishes to operate at.

The defence is missing both experience and leadership that will be vital if the club are looking to challenge both domestically and in Europe, with their current defence a relatively inexperienced one.

In that regard then, Ramos would be the perfect addition to the United side, and his experience in the Champions League is likely to be something Van Gaal would be keen to add to his side.
