Manchester United have secured the future of one defender, and are pursuing a high profile addition.
Manchester United have secured the future of centre-back Phil Jones, with the club confirming on their official website he has signed a long-term contract until 2019.
The England international has been with United since 2011 when he signed from Blackburn Rovers, and was regarded as one of the brightest talents in the country.
It has been a mixed four seasons since then for Jones, who has been shifted around in various positions including right-back and defensive midfield as well as his more natural centre-back.
His decision making has often seemed suspect, appearing clumsy at times and not yet the authoritative leader the Red Devils demand, yet their commitment to him with a new contract says it all about the club's faith in him.
A player who is very much the leader United need is Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos, who has been a mainstay at the Bernabeu for a decade.
United have been linked with him in recent days, but last night reports in multiple newspapers including The Guardian stated that Ramos has expressed his desire to quit Madrid, and sign for United.
Negotiations are ongoing, but considering United's tough stance regarding David de Gea, Real are unlikely to give him up easily.
Ramos is the type of player United need and lacked last year with Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand leaving in 2014, and buying him would win over any fans feeling underwhelmed by the news of Jones' new contract.
Here is a look at how supporters reacted to the two big pieces of news coming out within hours of each other...
