West Ham announce Europa League squad: Andy Carroll in, Modibo Maiga out

The Hammers are preparing for their Europa League first round qualifier against FC Lusitans on Thursday.

Slaven Bilic’s first squad as West Ham manager sees the welcome return of Andy Carroll but there is no place for former Sochaux forward Modibo Maiga.

The Malian has managed just three goals since his arrival in July 2012 and has spent the last season and a half away on loan at Queens Park Rangers and Metz, respectively.

The 27-year old may have been hopeful of a fresh start under Bilic after a decent return in France last season. The striker bagged nine goals in his 25 league appearances but that hasn’t been enough to warrant his inclusion by the new boss.

New arrival Pedro Obiang is included and could make his debut but there’s no place for fellow new arrival Dmitri Payet, whose signing came after the UEFA deadline for squad submission.

Clubs are allowed to register an additional player closer to the game however, so the Frenchman may yet see some action.

Andy Carroll, out since February with a knee injury, is included in the 47-man squad but the game should come too soon for him as he continues on the road to recovery.
