Report: West Brom have not bid for Middlesbrough defender George Friend

West Brom - The Hawthorns

West Brom have been linked with making a move for the Middlesbrough defender.

Friend is one of the best defenders in the Championship, and he has been linked with a move to the Premier League this summer, with the Express and Star claiming that West Brom and Crystal Palace have been preparing bids for him.

It is stated that both clubs were ready to offer £5 million to prise the 27-year-old left-back to the top flight, but the Birmingham Mail have denied such claims concerning West Brom, confirming that the Midlands club have not approached him.

There is no reference in the report that the Baggies are interested in him, and aside from confirming that no bid has been made, it is not stated whether they are preparing a bid either.

Whilst Palace’s interest could remain real, it appears as if West Brom have no desire to bring Friend to the Hawthorns this summer.

Last season, Friend excelled in the Championship as Boro reached the play-off final. He featured 45 times in the league, scoring one goal and registering two assists, captaining the side on occasion when Grant Leadbitter was out of action.

His leadership was on show on top of his defensive abilities, as he completed an impressive number of defensive actions per game. 2.1 tackles, 1.8 interceptions and three clearances completed every fixture meant Friend was one of the vital components of an impressive Boro defence. His versatility also came in handy, with Friend able to play in both the centre of defence and as a left-wing-back on top of his natural left-back position.

Despite West Brom not looking to sign Friend, whichever club does bring him to the Premier League will be signing a top class full-back in the prime of his career.
