The Serie A champions have reportedly opened preliminary talks about a potential move.
The Reds are reportedly keen on sealing a deal for the Croatian midfielder and have been linked with his signature for some time, although a deal is yet to be agreed.
And now, they may face competition from Serie A champions Juventus for his signature, with the Champions League finalists having reportedly opened preliminary talks with Inter Milan about potentially signing the midfielder.
Juve boss Massimiliano Allegri is thought to be keen to add a playmaker to his squad this summer, having already secured Sami Khedira and forwards Mario Mandzukic and Paulo Dybala, and has identified Kovacic as an option, according to the report in Tuttosport.
A perfect Steven Gerrard replacement
The news may come as a blow to Reds boss Brendan Rodgers, as there’s no denying Kovacic would be an excellent addition to his current midfield ranks.
While he has the creative talents of the likes of Phillippe Coutinho in the attacking midfielder role, the side is still lacking a true pass master in the middle of the park, with Jordan Henderson more of a box-to-box midfielder.
With Liverpool also having lost Steven Gerrard, there is every chance they were eyeing Kovacic as his long-term replacement, a role he could very easily fill.
It is however likely he would choose a move to Juventus, where league titles and Champions League qualification are guaranteed, over a move to Liverpool.
With a deal far from being concluded though, now may be the time for Liverpool to meet Inter Milan’s asking price and secure him ahead of the competition.
