According to Spanish publication Marca, all being well, Real Madrid should complete the signing of Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea before next week.
The report states that the former Atletico Madrid ‘keeper wants to leave Manchester before the players are due to arrive back to pre-season training on the 6th July. However, Louis van Gaal is not making it easy for Madrid or De Gea.
Marca adds that Rafael Benitez is eager to recruit a new number one ahead of the club’s pre-season tour of Australia and China on the 12th July, whereas the Red Devils are willing to play the waiting game.
Van Gaal will be keen to bring in a replacement for De Gea before allowing him to leave and the deal could hinge on a decision to who that may be.
Are United doing themselves or De Gea any favours prolonging the inevitable?
United are within their rights to keep hold of their Player of the Year award winner for as long as they deem necessary, but there is little chance the end result will differ – De Gea signing for Real Madrid ahead of the new season.
Van Gaal needs to find a suitable replacement for his number one ‘keeper and needs to be happy that he has made the right choice as it could be a decision that makes or breaks him ahead of next season.
The Red Devils are expected to be challenging for the Premier League title next season, among other accolades, and the loss of De Gea will be a big blow to their chances.
Therefore, a suitable replacement is as important as any decision the Dutchman will have to make this summer as a bad choice could end up not only costing United the title, but Van Gaal his job too.
All focus should be on getting the replacement through the door first, and when the wheels are in motion regarding that deal, then De Gea should be allowed to leave.
