Charlie Austin’s departure from QPR seems an inevitability but his destination is far from clear-cut. Newcastle, Southampton and Chelsea are among those to have been linked by the likes of the Daily Star.
Newcastle may well have stolen a march on their Premier League rivals if bookies odds are anything to go by. Sky Bet have attached odds of 5/6 on a North East move for the 25-year old.
West Ham are the closest rivals with odds of 3/1 while Bournemouth are outsiders at 9/2.
Whilst bookies odds are clearly not the most reliable of measures for transfer activity, a move to the Sports Direct Arena is one that appears to make sense for Austin.
The former England boss will be well aware of the need to strengthen and Austin’s arrival could be just the thing to lift the Geordie faithful ahead of the new season.
Signing a reliable centre-forward is paramount for Newcastle this summer, with their incumbent attackers failing to impress last season and the lure of hero worship at one of the Premier League’s biggest club may be too tantalising an offer for the QPR man to refuse.
