Benfica reportedly keen on bringing Lazar Markovic back to Portugal

Could the Liverpool player leave after just one season at Anfield?

According to a report from Italian website Tuttomercatoweb Benfica are interested in bringing Lazar Markovic back to the club just a year after he left for Liverpool.

The Serbian winger arrived at Anfield in a £20million deal back in July, shortly after playing a significant role in Benfica’s Primeira Liga triumph.

Rated as one of the hottest young properties in the game it seemed Liverpool had pulled off quite a coup even when the fee was factored in, but 12 months on and things have not gone according to plan for Markovic.

The 21-year-old made 34 appearances for Liverpool last season, scoring three goals and providing one assist in that time. But he lacked consistency and was used sparingly in the final few months of the campaign.

Now TMW claims Markovic could leave Anfield this summer and that Benfica are on his trail, keen to bring him back to the club.

Should Liverpool sell?

Not a chance! Okay, so Markovic did not set the world alight in his debut campaign at Anfield but he arrived when he was just 20 and had to acclimatise to a new country and a new league.

Anyone who saw the Serbian international play for Benfica knows what he is capable of and in time he is still going to become one of the best players in Europe – he just needs patience.

With a full year in England under his belt, and attuned to English football, next season will be the one where the real Markovic will come to the fore.

If it does not, then perhaps Liverpool should then cash in, but calling it quits after a single season would be short-sighted and foolish considering his innate talent.
