Report: Southampton join Premier League quartet in chase for Juventus star Angelo Ogbonna

Southampton, West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Everton have been linked with Juventus defender Angelo Ogbonna.

As per the latest reports from Sky Sports Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Juventus star Angelo Ogbonna has a new suitor in Southampton who are said to be willing to pay around £7 million for his services.

The Italian international centre-back has dominated the headlines in Turin this summer, his future heavily speculated upon after frequently being restricted to a place on the bench.

The Mirror credits West Ham United with a strong interest and Tottenham Hotspur as per TMW, Aston Villa, also as per TMW and Everton, according to the Liverpool Echo, are likewise named as suitors.

But the Premier League quartet could be trumped by the Saints from a financial perspective because the South Coast side are said to be willing to use a chunk of the likely Morgan Schneiderlin fee to land Ogbonna.

“Angelo Ogbonna could be heading to England after two seasons at Juve .Previously they [Southampton] were interested in a loan deal, but now they are willing to offer up to €10 million to acquire him on a permanent basis,” the report from Di Marzio states.

Would Ogbonna be a good buy for Southampton?

Angelo Ogbonna is an excellent centre-back who made 18 Serie A starts last season, an impressive tally given the competition for places in Turin.

Southampton have a shortage of centre-backs at the moment, and although the 27-year-old isn’t exactly a spring chicken, he does still have plenty of time on his side.

Aside from his defensive capabilities, Ogbonna is a reliable ball-playing centre-back which would undoubtedly suit Ronald Koeman’s style of play, averaging an 89.4% pass success rate last season.
