Report: Southampton eyeing Yohan Cabaye as Morgan Schneiderlin replacement

Southampton, West Ham and Crystal Palace are reportedly interested in former Newcastle star Cabaye, while Schneiderlin is allegedly on his way to Manchester United.

Southampton are looking at former Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye as a potential replacement for Morgan Schneiderlin, according to The Mirror.

It has been reported by the British newspaper that France international midfielder Schneiderlin is on his way to Manchester United in a £24 million deal.

With the Saints allegedly set to lose the 25-year-old, they are “drawing up a list of potential replacements”, according to The Mirror.

One of the top names on that list is Cabaye, according to the report, which also mentions Feyenoord’s Jordy Clasie and Idrissa Gueye of Lille as Southampton targets.

London duo West Ham United and Crystal Palace are interested in the France international midfielder as well, according to The Mirror.

Would Yohan Cabaye be a good signing for Southampton?

Cabaye has been on the books of French giants Paris Saint-Germain since January 2014, when he moved from Premier League outfit Newcastle United.

The 29-year-old established himself as one of the better central midfielders in England during his time at the Magpies, but he has struggled to play regularly for PSG since his move to the Ligue 1 outfit.

With Southampton aiming to challenge for a top-six finish in the Premier League next season, Cabaye would be a good addition to Ronald Koeman’s side if his compatriot Schneiderlin leaves.

However, age could be a factor. Schneiderlin is 25, and it does not bode well for the long term if his replacement is a 29-year-old.
