Villa have landed Micah Richards on a free transfer from Manchester City, but Sherwood appears to be keen on strengthening his defence even more.
The Sun believe that Villa are now targeting Serbian defender Veljkovic, who Sherwood worked with during his time in the Tottenham setup.
Veljkovic, 19, spent time on loan at Middlesbrough and Charlton Athletic last season, but could now be set for a Premier League loan after a remarkable summer.
The teenager was a key part of the Serbian Under-20 side which beat Brazil to win the World Cup earlier this summer, and his summer could get even better yet if Sherwood can convince Spurs to sanction a season-long deal.
What would Veljkovic bring to Aston Villa?
He may be young and inexperienced, but Veljkovic could make an impact at Villa - even if he isn't seen as a first choice player in Sherwood's side.
With the ability to play at centre back and in defensive midfield, Veljkovic is a versatile player who can fill different roles for Sherwood whilst developing at the same time.
It may not grab headlines, nor get Villa fans off their seat, but Veljkovic has strength and as well as composure in possession, so could be an underrated signing for Villa should he arrive this summer.
