Newcastle to reportedly resist Ron Vlaar move and focus on Joel Matip

St James Park Four

Newcastle United reportedly have no intention of signing the Aston Villa player and instead will focus their efforts on trying to sign the Schalke star.

According to a report from the Chronicle Live, Newcastle United look set to resist a move for soon-to-be free agent Ron Vlaar and instead focus on attempting to sign Joel Matip this summer.

The report claims that while the Aston Villa centre-back has been linked with a move to St James’ Park he is highly unlikely to be brought to the Magpies given his age, and that it is the Schalke defender Steve McClaren is going all out to sign.

At 23, Matip is seven years Vlaar’s junior and with a contract that expires in 2016 the Cameroon international could be bought for a knock-down fee if his current club are not prepared to risk losing him for free next summer.

Matip may be considerably younger but Vlaar has plenty of Premier League experience having featured 88 times for Villa and there would be a risk involved in signing a player who has spent his entire career in Germany.

That said, Matip is a class act and after 217 games for Schalke and 22 appearances for Cameroon he could be a wonderful addition to Newcastle’s squad.

They certainly need to strengthen at the back and Chronicle Live suggests Newcastle’s pursuit of Matip is ongoing, with the defender allegedly keen on a move to England.
