Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer react on Twitter to England Ladies win

Three Lions Wembley

The Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United icons were full of praise. So too was Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney.

England are into the semi-finals of the World Cup. It's a strange phrase to get used to, isn't it?

But thanks to the England Ladies - and, unsurprisingly, not the men - that phrase is now a reality.

And plenty on Twitter were keen to celebrate and heap praise on the victorious Lionesses after they defeated hosts Canada 2-1.

Tottenham icon and Match of the Day host Gary Lineker, as well as Newcastle legend and Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer, were just two of them.

Indeed, ex-Tottenham and England striker Lineker, who reached the World Cup semi-finals at Italia 1990, thinks there could be more to come.

Former Newcastle forward Shearer, meanwhile, reached the semi-finals of Euro '96 - hosted by England - and also congratulated the Ladies on social media:

One of the first to react, however, was Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney. Unlike the Newcastle and Spurs icons, Rooney is yet to experience an international semi-final and he also praised the Ladies for doing the country proud.

Whatever the outcome of the last four, the England side should be welcomed back as heroines...
