According to French newspaper L'Equipe, Manchester United have joined the ever-growing list of clubs chasing Monaco star Aymen Abdennour.
United have landed PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay already this summer, but manager Louis van Gaal is now expected to turn his attention to strengthening his defensive options.
A top centre back is certainly required this summer, and L'Equipe report that the Red Devils now joined the race to sign Abdennour, with Liverpool also interested.
Abdennour, 25, has established himself as one of the top centre backs in France during spells with Toulouse and now Monaco, with the Tunisian attracting plenty of interest.
The Mirror recently reported that both Newcastle United and West Ham United are vying over Abdennour's signature, with both clubs needing defensive reinforcements.
Now though, United could blow both of them out of the water by joining the race for Abdennour, who would surely be lured to Old Trafford with the promise of Champions League football.
Any hope for Newcastle and West Ham?
Both teams finished in disappointingly low positions in the Premier League last season, and whilst they look set to spend money, they are unlikely to be able to compete with Manchester United.
The Red Devils can offer playing in front of the Old Trafford crowd, playing in the Champions League and competing for the Premier League title too.
That makes it incredibly difficult for Newcastle and West Ham to compete, but the glimmer of hope may be that they could offer more guaranteed first-team football than van Gaal's men
