106 touches, 5 take-ons: Arsenal-linked star William Carvalho proves he’s ready for big move

Arsenal have been linked with Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho.

According to a report in The Sun last week, Arsenal had made a £28.5 million offer for Sporting Lisbon’s highly-rated defensive midfielder William Carvalho.

The 23-year-old has long been linked with a move to the Premier League, owing to a number of superb displays for the Lisbon-based outfit and on the international stage.

Capped as a full international, Carvalho is spending the summer leading the U21 side in the European Championships in the Czech Republic.

After demonstrating his ability in the 1-0 win over England, the strapping defensive midfielder was even more impressive on Saturday as his nation demolished Germany 5-0 to set-up a final with Sweden.

As per the table above, Carvalho was at the heart of everything good about the Portuguese youngsters as he instigated attacks from deep with fine passing and powerful runs.

The Gunners are said to be keen on bolstering their midfield ranks this summer, and their ideal addition is right in front of their eyes as Carvalho put on a Yaya Toure-esque display of utter domination.

The youngster racked up a whopping 106 touches as he was central to everything, successfully completing 89.7% of his intended passes and nine accurate long passes.

Defensively he was a rock, notching up three interceptions and two clearances while going forward he completed a highly-impressive five successful take-ons, powering past the opposition.

The Germans entered the competition as arguably the favourites to land the trophy, yet that tag is now Portugal’s heading into the final and especially with Carvalho leading the charge.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has been guilty of letting quality youngsters slip through his grasp, he needs to make sure he doesn’t make that mistake again this time around.
