Why a move for Nemanja Vidic would be brilliant for Everton

Everton have been linked with the former Manchester United star, and as unlikely as it may be it would be great for the Toffees if it came off.

According to a report from the Liverpool Echo, Everton have been linked with a move for Inter Milan defender Nemanja Vidic.

They have followed up on the initial claims to include comments from the player’s agent, suggesting no move has been made by the Toffees. But if there was any chance of the Serbian leaving the San Siro this summer, he would be a wonderful addition to Roberto Martinez’s side.

The centre-back left Manchester United last summer but he has not had the best of times at Inter, failing to replicate the form that made him a fan favourite for so long at Old Trafford.

Suspensions and minor injuries have also played their part in ensuring Vidic’s time in Italy has been hit-and-miss up to now, so why shouldn’t Everton make a cheeky bid and see what happens?

After all, Toffees manager Roberto Martinez needs to strengthen his back-line following the departure of Sylvain Distin and Antolin Alcaraz and Vidic knows the Premier League like the back of his hand.

Everton may have John Stones and Phil Jagielka in place but strength in depth will be vital next season and Vidic – while a surprise link in a summer when such things are commonplace – would be a truly fantastic addition.

The rumours may have been dismissed by some but who knows what is going on behind the scenes, and if there is any chance that Vidic could return to England, Everton would be wise to throw their hat into the proverbial ring.
