Arsenal supporters have taken to social networking site Twitter in order to lavish praise on goalkeeper David Ospina following his display for Colombia on Friday.
The Colombians eventually fell to Argentina via a penalty shoot-out, but they were largely indebted to Ospina’s heroics over the 90 minutes as they held out for a 0-0 draw.
Argentina, led by superstar Lionel Messi, dominated proceedings and it looked for all the world like a first-half opener was on the cards as the Barcelona man found himself five yards out with a free header.
However, after Sergio Aguero’s connection from a right-wing cross was saved by Ospina’s legs, the custodian managed to quickly react to spectacularly parry away Messi’s follow-up header.
More chances fell Argentina’s way, but there was no getting past the Gunners’ current number one as he brilliantly kept out everything that came his way in a pulsating 90 minutes of action.
The 26-year-old’s display was all the more impressive given his club future has been placed into doubt following the likely signing of Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech.
A report in The Sun suggested Ospina was considering quitting the club amid the Cech links, with Polish international Wojciech Szczesny also vying for a first-team spot.
However, Ospina’s display has subsequently reminded the Gunners supporters that their current number one isn’t too shabby at all and calls on Twitter for him to stay have come to the fore.
I don't wanna get rid of Ospina anymore. Szczesny can go. Lool #COYG— Gustavo Wayne (@gooner017) June 27, 2015
