Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Steve Harper told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show for talkSPORT that he feels the first thing Steve McClaren needs at the club, is to be backed.
McClaren has been handed the responsibility of take the Magpies forward, landing the job after he was sacked by Championship team Derby County.
Newcastle narrowly avoided relegation with a win against West Ham on the final day of last season and Harper feels McClaren has to be backed to spend effectively in the transfer market, to take the team forward.
“He needs backing first of all, we saw last year with John Carver – it was very tough for him. They need to spend some money – He’s a good coach – It’s a great football club and hopefully he can assemble a good staff and the owner and board give him some money to spend,” he told talkSPORT.
Can McClaren be confident he’ll be backed?
Newcastle owner Mike Ashley explained in an interview for Sky Sports that he’s determined to oversee some success at the club, which suggests he will give McClaren what he needs to improve his squad options.
However, the Newcastle board (which Ashley is no longer part of) also have a responsibility to stick with McClaren over the early part of the season.
If the results aren’t going as planned for the Magpies, the board could get a bit twitchy but McClaren deserves a fair crack at the role, regardless of the circumstances which led to him getting the job.
Hopefully he can make the most of that backing and hopefully the team can move on.
