Report: Watford interested in Leeds target Joey Barton

Watford and Leeds United are reportedly interested in former Newcastle United and Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton.

Watford are interested in signing former Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton, according to The Sun.

It has been reported by the British tabloid that the newly-promoted Premier League outfit want at least two new central midfielders this summer, and the 32-year-old is one of them.

Barton is a free agent at the moment, having been released by QPR at the end of the 2014-15 season, which means that the Hornets will not have to pay any transfer fee for him.

However, Watford will not be able to pay the former Newcastle United midfielder the £80,000-per-week salary he was getting at QPR, according to The Sun.

Barton is also on the radar of Championship club Leeds United, as reported by The Yorkshire Evening Post, but the Whites will also have a problem in paying his wages.

Watford or Leeds United?

If Barton has offers from Watford and Leeds, then he should choose the former, mainly because he will still get to play in the Premier League.

Leeds are one of the biggest clubs of England, but they are in the Championship and may not even make the playoffs next season.

Watford will be struggling for survival in the Premier League, but Barton, who is 32 years of age, will be playing in the world’s most popular domestic league week in and week out.
