Report: Watford close in on deal for Stoke-linked midfielder Emmanuel Badu

Forza Udinese

Watford and Stoke City lead the chase for Emmanuel Badu.

According to the Italian publication TMW, Watford are set to complete deals for Udinese duo Thomas Heurtaux and Emmanuel Badu.

The latter, a 62-capped Ghana international defensive midfielder, has impressed Serie A observers over the past 12 months with a number of solid performances.

As per a previous report by TMW, Premier League side Stoke City were credited with holding an interest as the Potters look at a potential replacement for the much-coveted Steven N’Zonzi.

However, it appears Mark Hughes has been beaten to the punch by the newly-promoted Hornets as their Udinese connections appear to be put to full use once more.

“Following the rejection of Davide Santon, the English club now close in on a double deal for defender Thomas Heurtaux and midfielder Emmanuel Badu,” TMW reveal.

Who is Emmanuel Badu?

Despite being just 5ft 8inch, Badu is a tenacious midfielder and the type who would thrive in the Premier League, such is his physicality and work rate.

The 24-year-old appeared in 27 Serie A matches last season, often selected as the deepest midfielder and tasked with providing protection for the defence.

The Pozzo family are seemingly doing all they can to provide the Hornets with enough strength in depth to compete in the Premier League, and sending Badu to them rather than a league rival makes sense.

Before joining Udinese, the Ghana star had trials at Middlesbrough and Wolverhampton Wanderers - per the Daily Mirror - but ultimately the Championship duo decided not to take him on.
