The Dutch international midfielder has been a long-term target of Saints boss Ronald Koeman, having worked together at Feyenoord prior to the move to the South Coast, and Clasie still has a good relationship with the coach.
The Star have claimed that the Saints were reaping a move for him this summer regardless of any of their other transfer business, but the latest report indicates that they will only look to sign the 23-year-old should Schneiderlin leave the club.
It looks as if the French midfielder is now on his way out of St Mary’s Stadium, being quoted by Sky Sports as confirming that his future will be decided in the coming days following interest from Manchester United and Tottenham.
Should he depart, Southampton will then formalise their interest in Clasie, making a concrete approach for him, with the report stating that Feyenoord value their captain at roughly £13 million.
He would be a good replacemtn for Schneiderlin, being the same type of deep-lying midfielder, and for the asking price Clasie looks a budget signing. Koeman is a big fan of the player, and if he can get him playing to his best ability, the Saints would have a real star on their hands.
