Report: QPR boss Chris Ramsey was Tim Sherwood's preferred no.2, not Ray Wilkins

The Aston Villa boss has got his man - but not the one he originally wanted.

Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood originally wanted Queens Park Rangers boss Chris Ramsey as his assistant at Villa Park, according to the Daily Mail.

According to the report, Ray Wilkins has arrived at Aston Villa to become Sherwood's new assistant - but the head coach wanted QPR's Ramsey originally.

The duo worked together during their time at Tottenham Hotspur but Ramsey has been appointed QPR boss on a permanent basis since Sherwood's initial interest in hiring him.

As such, the Mail claim the Aston Villa coach has got his man - just not his preferred choice.

Improvement or the traditional struggles?

This summer should be key for Sherwood as he prepares to elevate Villa from the rank of perennial strugglers. But the former Spurs boss's brief time at Villa Park already will have shown him the potential pitfalls he faces.

After an initial surge of optimism surrounded his appointment, Sherwood got Aston Villa playing well and winning games.

As soon as Premier League safety was more or less secured, however, the Villa side performed poorly - and were thrashed by the likes of Southampton and Arsenal. It smacked of what Villa have been doing for years and their manager will hope Wilkins can help take the club to new heights.
