Report: Newcastle to lodge formal bid for Aleksandar Mitrovic, Benfica unable to match financial demands

St James Park

Newcastle are set to submit a formal offer for Aleksandar Mitrovic, after Swansea had a bid rejected.

Newcastle have long been linked with making a move for Mitrovic, and a new report in HLN has claimed that they are ready to submit a formal offer for his services.

It is expected that the Magpies will submit a £13 million offer for his services, having seen Premier League rivals Swansea City fail in an approach of roughly £10 million.

It is stated in the report that Mitrovic favours a move to Benfica, the main club rivalling Newcastle for his services now, but it is believed that the Portuguese outfit are not wealthy enough to make the same offer as the Magpies.

Whilst not a boost for Newcastle, as Mitrovic could reject a transfer even if a fee is agreed with Anderlecht, it certainly appears as if the Tyneside club are leading the race for his signature.

Serbian international Mitrovic, 20, has built a promising reputation with Anderlecht in recent months, scoring an impressive 27 goals in 50 games during the 2014/15 season.

His consistent goalscoring threat is something needed at St James’ Park, and although doubts will remain about his ability until he has proven himself in a top league, it Newcastle can sign him for roughly £13 million, they will be making a move in the right direction ahead of next season.
