Newcastle are reportedly optimistic about their chances of signing Florian Thauvin from Marseille.
According to the Daily Star, Newcastle remain optimistic about their chances of signing Marseille playmaker Florian Thauvin, and are expected to make another bid this weekend.
Reinforcements in the final third are certainly needed, and the Daily Star believe that Newcastle are continuing to pursue Frenchman Thauvin.
They report suggests that Newcastle have had an £11m bid rejected already, but the Magpies will return with another bid for the 22-year-old in the next 24 hours.
With Marseille set to lose playmaker Dimitri Payet as well as having already lost Andre Ayew and Andre-Pierre Gignac to Swansea and Tigres respectively, it's become an exodus at the Stade Velodrome as they desperately try to raise funds - which will give Newcastle hope that they can strike a deal.
Too similar to Cabella?
Last summer, Newcastle signed a diminutive French playmaker with great dribbling ability and an impressive record in Ligue 1. This summer, Newcastle are targeting a diminutive French playmaker with great dribbling ability and an impressive record in Ligue 1.
A year ago it was Remy Cabella, this time it's Thauvin - but are they too similar? Thauvin would be more comfortable out wide than Cabella, but Newcastle saw the former Montpellier man struggle in his debut Premier League season, and some fans may be concerned that Thauvin could go the same way.
With so many improvements needed elsewhere, Newcastle need to make sure they don't overpay for Thauvin - especially given his similarity to Cabella.
