Former Arsenal favourite Ray Parlour suggested the sort of player Brendan Rodgers should target as his assistant, when he co-hosted the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show for talkSPORT.
Rodgers is currently without a deputy as he prepares for the challenges of next season and the former England midfielder has suggested that the Anfield chief would benefit from having someone like Jamie Carragher next to him next season.
“Someone like Jamie Carragher, imagine him as number two. The inspiration he would show to that dressing room, like Ryan Giggs at Manchester United – Try and mould him into a manager going forward,” he said.
Decision sooner rather than later
Rodgers needs to try and make a decision over his number two sooner rather than later because he’s at one of the biggest football clubs in the world and will need some help over the rest of the summer.
If he gets an assistant in quickly, it will allow him to focus on the areas he feels he needs to spend more time on personally, as the Reds look to get back into the top four of the Premier League, which means back into the Champions League.
Why would someone like Carragher be a good appointment?
What Parlour seemed to be getting at with his comments on talkSPORT is that a popular former player with the right qualities, would be able to represent the identity of the football club effectively.
Carragher also had leadership qualities and responsibilities as a player and those attributes may something similar at managerial level, much easier for someone to adapt to.
It’s not a bad idea on the part of Parlour and it will be interesting to see the decision that Rodgers goes with.
