Ex Everton and Fulham defender John Heitinga returns to Ajax

The Netherlands international heads back to Amsterdam seven years after leaving the Dutch giants

Ajax have signed their former defender John Heitinga, who has taken in spells in Spain, England and Germany since leaving the Netherlands capital seven years ago.

The Dutchman has signed a one-year contract at his old side, with the possibility of an extension at the end of that.

The Netherlands international came through the famous Dutch club's academy, making his first team debut in 2001 and going on to accumulate 215 appearances before moving to Atletico Madrid in 2008.

The 31-year-old only stayed in Spain for one season before making what would end up being a key switch in his career when he signed for Everton.

Heitinga would spend four seasons at Goodison Park before leaving for an ill-fated spell at Fulham that saw the Cottagers relegated.

He moved to Hertha Berlin last season, but would again only remain in one place for a single campaign, as the Bundesliga side disappointed with a 15th place finish.

To date, Heitinga has made 87 appearances for his country, including the 2010 World Cup final where he was sent off in the loss to Spain, though his last cap for his country came in 2013.
